What Separates a Great Website Design from Others?

Next time you see an amazing website, remember this-“what you are viewing and using is only the tip of the iceberg!”  The graphic elements that you see is only a drop compared to the sea of codes behind the website. Great websites do not start with the visuals, they start with the purpose of the website.

Having a website is a good commitment to have and to move forward with. A website may not necessarily have to be for business, websites deal and entertain a wide variety of people and topics. In this article, however we will deal more with websites that have two main purposes in mind i.e. to make money, to increase readership.

Money is made almost automatically when unique visit statistics are high, visitors are loyal and a re-targeting web marketing model is made to work. These are all big challenges but every one of them can be overcome with a good blue-print plan and the perseverance to outdo each test.  You have to think about how people use your website. Unique visits refer to new visitors who have never been to the site before, loyal visitors have already been in the website before and re-targeting in web marketing refers to the effort placed by web marketers to “Re” target visitors who already visited the website to turn into loyal visitors.

Website Design

Pre-Layout Phase  : Web Marketing Decisions

Web marketing decisions to be made during the pre-layout phase

Usually Unique visitors come from having a good SEO plan. SEO or search engine optimization is the process whereby websites are manipulated by content, meta tags and backlinks ( links from other domains coming back to another website). Loyal visits are maintained by having good functionality ( image display, price comparisons, quick searches, web download speeds etc )and dynamic content feeding out of the website via social media, newsletters, RSS feeds, mobile applications and other. Re-targeting efforts require landing pages, opt-ins, social media links, web analytic, lead tracking and databases. Having room for these elements in a website design will be the most ideal way to move on to the next phase of website wire frame and navigation patterns.

Website Design

Pre-Layout Phase  : Website wire frames and navigational patterns.

Wire frames are the skeletal blue print of the entire website. Its the plan of how the pages will be wired to each other via links and how deep they will be set from the main domain. Prioritizing important keyword rich categories or blogs to be closer to the home page helps a lot in SEO.  The wireframes also give the website designer and developer to forecast ETAs on the website, costs can be calculated and unforseen problems in the web architecture can be easily remedied instantly without the burden of re-coding.

Navigational patterns are what govern how a visitor will use the website. What important elements need to be placed before others, much like a movie-director or novelist, website navigation allow visitors to easily use the website, remember where each important page was, keep them away from dead-ends and most importantly, get them to where they want to be fast.

Website Design

Layout Phase  : Graphics

After the pre-layout is done, the graphic artist can then creatively weave a theme about the website plan. While keeping abreast of the web marketing plans, wire frames and navigational structures of the website, the graphic artist can now apply the meat onto the skeletal blue print of the website. Usually there can be  anywhere between 2 pages to  50 pages of custom page designs in a website.

Its also the graphic artist’s duty to work with  already existing materials from the client such as benchmark websites (websites used for design benchmark ), logos and other visual brands.

Website Design

Layout Phase  : CSS / CMS and CRM

Finally, we come to the coding phase where the graphics are sliced to HtML codes and placed within web pages. This is the conversion process from graphic data to web data. CSS or cascading style sheets allows the web designer to interpret visuals to web code.

Simultaneously a web developer begins with the database design and integration of different CMS and CRMs onto the web coded pages. CMS is content management systems, as the term applies, it is that which allows content to be created, edited and published. The content maybe text, image, video or audio.

CRMs on the other hand refers to Customer Relations Management which allows for database capture and interaction between website and the users.

Website Design

Launch Phase  : Quality Assurance

When the codes are done and all existing communication systems such as emails and opt-ins are working and tested, we arrive at the final step. QA or quality assurance can be compared to proofreading a novel. This is usually elaborate and involves checking a checklist from typos, broken links, working scripts, SEO meta tagging, Email configuration , Database tests, mobile device friendliness and website loading speeds.

There are many mediocre websites around as well but the truly great websites stand out in taste. Websites are truly a work of art and collaboration from concept to actualization. Web designers, developers, graphic artists, quality assurance testers, website project handlers, client relations reps and web marketers all join in to make a perfect website.
